Professor
Kwang-Hyun Cho received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 1993, 1995, and 1998, respectively. From March 1999 to August 2004, he was a Lecturer and an Assistant Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Ulsan, Korea. From June 2002 to August 2003, he was a Visiting Professor at the Control Systems Centre in the Department of Electrical Engineering & Electronics at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), U.K. From January to March in 2004 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Automatic Control Group in the Department of Signals, Sensors and Systems at the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. Between June and August 2004, he was an invited Senior Research Fellow at the Hamilton Institute, Ireland. From September 2004 to August 2007, he was an Associate Professor at the College of Medicine, Seoul National University, Korea and worked at the Bio-MAX Institute, Seoul National University, Korea as a Director of the Systems Biology Laboratory. He is currently a tenured full Professor in the Department of Bio and Brain Engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), holds a joint position at the KAIST Institutes for IT Convergence & BioCentury, and is a director of the Laboratory for Systems Biology and Bio-Inspired Engineering. In May 2011, he got an honor to become a KAIST Chair Professor. He was a guest editor of SIMULATION: Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International (vol. 79, no. 12, 2003) and IEEE Control Systems Magazine (vol. 24, no. 4, 2004) for the special systems biology issues. He has been guest editors of numerous journals for the special issue of systems biology and has given a number of plenary/keynote talks at international conferences on systems biology including ICSB2008 (the 9th Int. Conf. on Systems Biology) held in Gothenburg, Sweden. He co-founded Systems Biology as an Editor-in-Chief, which is the world-first international journal in systems biology launched by IEE (changed to IET in 2007) in London from 2004. He is currently an Editorial Board Member of Systems and Synthetic Biology (Springer, Netherlands, from 2006), BMC Systems Biology (BMC, London, U.K., from 2007), Gene Regulation and Systems Biology (Libertas Academica, New Zealand, from 2007), Bulletin of Mathematical Biology (Springer, New York, from 2008), and Mathematical Biosciences (Elsevier, Netherlands, from 2010), and an Editorial Advisory Board Member of Molecular BioSystems (The Royal Society of Chemistry, U.K.). He is also an Associate Editor of BMC Systems Biology and BMC Research Notes (BMC, London, U.K., from 2008), and Bulletin of Mathematical Biology (Springer, New York, from 2008). He is a Senior Member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS). He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of IET Systems Biology (IET, London, U.K.) and one of the Editors-in-Chief of the 'Encyclopedia of Systems Biology' to be published by Springer in New York. He served a Research Grant Review Committee Member of Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) in 2008-2009, an External Reviewer of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) in the U.K. in 2007, an External Reviewer of the Medical Research Council (MRC) in the U.K. in 2007, a Scientific Advisory Group Member of the COSBICS (Computational Systems Biology of Cell Signaling) in the EU Framework Programme 6 in Germany during 2005-2008, and a Review Committee Member of the Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme in Cambridge, U.K. in 2008. He was the recipient of the Honor Prize by the Korean Minister of Science and Technology in 1993, the Excellent Academic Activity Award from ICASE in 2002, the Best Paper Award for a Young Scientist from ICASE in 2003, the Award for Excellent SCI Papers in 2005 from Seoul National University Hospital, the IEEE/IEEK Joint Award for Young IT Engineer of the Year 2008, the Excellent Professor Award of 2008 from the College of Life Science and Bioengineering in KAIST, the Technology Innovation Award from KAIST in 2009, the International Activity Award from KAIST in 2010, and the Young Scientist Award from the President of Korea in 2010. His research interests cover the areas of systems science with bio-medical applications including systems biology and bio-inspired engineering based on molecular systems biology. The focus has been on applications in biotechnology and bio-medical sciences, in particular, a system-level analysis of cellular signal transduction pathways, reverse engineering of biomolecular regulatory networks from time-series data, unraveling hidden cellular dynamics, and development of new kinds of engineering systems inspired from molecular biology.
